He nodded. “Circle Lightfall could get you a house,” he said, cautiously. “Or an apartment.” Mari’s lungs began to burn. She’d been watching his eyes and forgot to breathe. “No,” she said, and pulled in a breath. “Look, I don’t want charity. Not from Circle Lightfall, not from anyone. Okay?” He nodded. “What about a gift, then?” he said. “I don’t have much to give you, Mari, but—” Oddly enough, that made her laugh. He stopped, staring at her, and then glancing over her shoulder to check the street behind her. “That’s okay,” Mari said when she could speak again. “I don’t have anything to give either, so we’re even. “That’s good,” he replied. “Right?”
“I think it’s because of you,” she said. “I slept all through last night. I haven’t done that in ages.”

“Not really. Human-looking, that’s all. The world’s a lot more crowded than anyone thinks.” She wanted to know what the stone-eyed man really was, but this was fascinating. “How do you find out about all this stuff?”
“Well, there’s classes every Watcher takes. Anatomy of nonhuman species, classification of Dark. It’s
